FoxNews is reporting that there was a workplace shooting at The Ohio State University this morning. By law, universities in Ohio are a gun free zone. How could a gun crime such as this occur in a place where there were no guns? Surely no one bent on murder would break that rule. Must all be lies. Impossible. Myth, urban legend, didn't happen. We are all safe where there are no guns after all.

Safety Fail

Three weeks ago, during the lull in shooting at an Ohio CHL class, the instructor reminded the students that a safety is a mechanical device that can fail. The very next shooter up found out just how true that is when her safety broke and pieces ended up on her arm.

The gun is a SCCY CPX-1 which is basically a Kel-Tec P-11 with a manual safety.

The owner chose this gun for a variety of reasons. First, it is light weight and fits her hand quite well. The edges are all well rounded so snagging is reduced. Finally, she chose this over the Kel-Tec because it did have a manual safety. She is new to concealed carry and is not quite sure how she will carry. She felt the safety gave her more off-body (read purse) options.

Of course, now her SCCY CPX-1, in effect is a Kel-Tec P-11.

SCCY says they will ship her the parts to repair. They also offer a conversion kit for $20 if you want to remove the safety. However, since a Kel-Tec P-11 runs about $20 more than the SCCY, if you are wanting to buy one and convert it, then get the Kel-Tec. If you like the idea of the manual safety, the SCCY is an inexpensive carry option. I thought about picking one up as a truck console gun but I think I would go with the Kel-Tec only because I am not a fan of the safety as my fat fingers tend to apply it when shooting.

RCBS

My reloading equipment is largely Hornady red but I don't discriminate, and as such I have some green and even orange equipment scattered in as well. One such piece of equipment is a R CBS press mounted APS priming toolCBS press mounted APS priming tool. I use it to prime anything not loaded on the progressive. I am a fan of the APS strips and would use them on my Hornady L-N-L AP if someone could figure out how.

Anyway, I've used the RCBS tool for a dozen years or more and some of the small parts are beginning to wear. I searched over their website to buy replacements but could not find parts anywhere. Finally I emailed RCBS tech support. The parts are on their way, free of charge. Nice. These are parts that have worn from extensive use and I was willing to pay a modest fee for them but RCBS replaced them anyway. I do not believe they were failures of "materials or workmanship" as most warranties specify but they stood by them anyway. It is nice to see a company with that attitude.

Fair and balanced disclaimer: Hornady has always stood by their products as well and have even replaced parts that I broke through misuse and abuse. I have also heard that the blue company is the same though I don't have any first hand experience. I don't believe that we are getting good customer service out of one because of the others though if so, then so be it. I think some companies know their customers and client communities and the big reloading companies are an important part of it.

Free Bullets

I received a confirmation email from Hornady that says my free bullets are shipping. If you are not familiar with Hornady's Free Bullet campaign called "Get Loaded", you should be and they are offering it once again in 2010. Hornady reloading gear is decently priced (most of the time, I do have this one pseudo-gripe post I am writing....) and top notch quality. The free bullets are just icing on the cake and totally removes any price comparison to other brands.

Last year I bought Dad some 30-30 dies and had until 2/15/10 to get the UPC and receipt mailed in to get 100 free bullets. I just squeaked under the deadline. Dies are $27 and the premium rifle bullets would cost another $21.95 normally. What a deal.

Cheaper Than Dirt Sponsoring ePostal Matches

The ePostal matches will be slightly different this year in that Cheaper Than Dirt will be presenting a $50 gift certificate to a random entry. I also hope the matches are slightly different in that I actually enter some of them as I say I am going to do every year and don't. We all applaud CTD's generosity but really it is kind of an investment on their part. I know that I for one if a winner, would end up ordering far more than the value of the gift certificate as I expect any of the recipients will do.

CLARIFICATION: I typed "Hosting" instead of "Sponsoring" in the title. Fixed. Various gun blogs will be hosting the matches. Cheaper than Dirt is providing the gift certificate.

The following I blatantly stole from perimedik on the Long Island Firearms reloading forum.

I must post these three disclaimers:

1. Don't hold me or perimedik responsible if you burn or blow yourself up.

2. I have not tried this yet but intend to give it a whirl.

3. I don't think Hornady One Shot Case Lube sucks.

I've posted this on a few other forums so I'll share here too.
I've seen a few of these threads so I decided to turn it into a step by step pictorial.

Step One
Throw "One Shot" in the garbage because evdentially it sucks...

Step Two - Gather contents -
Liquid Lanolin (100% pure was $7.00 at the local health food store)
Isopropyl Alcohol (at minimum 91% $1.19 at the local drug store - 99% is best couldn't find it)
If you go to an Auto Store ISO HEET is 99% Isopropyl
New or Clean spray bottle (from the "Dollar" store) has ratio markings and ounce markings so it helps

Step Three
Warm the Lanolin in warm tap water (110 to 120 degrees F - NO OPEN FLAMES!)
Do the same for the IPA, this will help in the mixing process.

Step Four
Pour 2 (two) ounces of the warmed Lanolin into the spray bottle

Step Five
Pour 16 (sixteen) ounces of the warmed IPA into the spray bottle giving you an 1:8 ratio
This seem to be the ratio that best mimics Dillon Spray Lube (add more IPA if you feel it is too thick in your dies)

Step Six
Shake until contents becomes homogonized and label the bottle accordingly (so you don't confuse it with CLP or something)

Then proceed to lube cases as needed. I left some room in case I needed to adjust the ratio depending on the dies and how finiky they may be. This Ratio seems to work fine for me. I did about 30 once fired LC headstamps and it was smooth as silk.

Good luck hope it helps. I can make WAY more lbe for way less money than Dillon or One Shot costs.

'Missles' Launched At Police in Virginia

A pair of hardened criminals were nabbed by brave policemen yesterday when the pair launched missiles at an unmarked police car. The missles were made of hardened H20, a chemical compound found throughout the Midwest and Atlantic Seaboard this week.

Yep, with all the crime going on, the police actually took the time to book two college kids with a felony for throwing snowballs. What heroes for saving us all!

These 'felons' that will have their lives destroyed if convicted, are lucky that they didn't do this up North. We saw what happened in Massachusetts a few years back when citizens threw snowballs at the authorities.

Reloading Again

Charles Daly Closing

Charles Daly is out of business. Sad, really. I hate to see a gun company go under. I bought one of their 1911's in 2003 and it is not bad, especially for an entry level 1911. I also had wanted one of their new made Hi-Powers just because I never had a Hi-Power. I'll miss their booth at the NRA Convention in Charlotte later this year. I spent some time there at Louisville in 2008.

To all our friends, fans, supporters and consumers of Charles Daly and by extension, KBI products, I regret to inform you that the rumors of our demise are true.
KBI is going out of business and closing its doors, effective today, January 29, 2010.
I don't want to go into each and every detail as to why this has occurred, except to say that there have been a multitude of events over the past five years that have contributed to our current situation.
For those of you with ongoing service requirements please be advised that we are currently negotiating with several companies that will be performing after-sale service of Charles Daly, CD Defense and Jericho firearms.
