.303 British
Reading Ridefast's posts about GBRIII and shooting his Enfield No. 4 got me thinking about the .303 British. That has got to be one of my favorite cartridges ever and I'm not sure why. Maybe because it conjures up images of empire and subduing future Verizon workers. Or how about the trenches, Gallipoli or fighting off the nips in the South Pacific. Of course, it could just be because it is fun to shoot.
My first centerfire rifle was in .303 British. It was a factory sporter model 1905 Ross. This is a straight-pull bolt produced by Canada early in the last century. I haven't seen my digital camera since I moved 6 weeks ago, but when I find it, I'll post some gun pron. My next .303 Brit was an old No. 1 Mk III made in 1918. I bought it from a friend who was going into the Army and liquidating. It still wears the original stock but it had long ago been sporterized probably before I was born. However, it is still pretty and very fun to shoot. Over the years I also acquired a couple of No.4 Mk I's to add to the mix.
I think I'll dig something out this weekend that hasn't seen the light of day in a while and send some 174 grain pieces of lead into the old tree stump. Hmmm, wonder if I even have any fodder loaded up?
