He Did What The Criminal Wanted
From WTOL
The student, Evan Smith is a member of the marching band. Now maybe he will wake up and join the SCCC.
UPDATE.
The Independent Collegian posted a story on the same incident. And sure enough, UTPD Chief Jeff Newton is quoted as saying that Evan did everything he should and others encountering the same crime should also roll over and never fight back. He even goes on to tell other potential victims that they should not carry a weapon for defense. They might get hurt. The Chief also suggested that students travel in groups. Huh? These students were traveling in a group you moron.
The chief even hypothesized that had Evan pulled a gun instead of complying that he might have been shot instead of, well, getting shot. He said that surviving the encounter was the best thing. "I think he did everything right, and he survived, even though the person decided to shoot." -Chief Newton.
I am glad this turned out okay after all but what if the bullet had paralyzed the 18 year old boy? I mean, he would still have "survived". Surviving a fight is not sufficient, you need to take all the steps you can to prevail in the fight, not merely survive.
Chief Newton's roll over and play dead advice is dangerous. Students should seek self defense instruction from a competent source, not this obviously under educated and unprofessional police officer. I'm sure the chief is fine at pushing papers at a desk but he does not know much about criminals.
TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - A University of Toledo student has been shot after a group of students was held up. The incident happened in the 1000 block of Broer in west Toledo.
He did everything the gunman told him to. Don't the police always tell you to just comply and you won't get hurt? The student, Evan Smith is a member of the marching band. Now maybe he will wake up and join the SCCC.

I completely agree. College students should be armed. Brilliant. 18 year olds who have just moved out of their parents homes with no real gun experience or training and who also attend parties where alcohol and fighting are commonplace should walk around with guns on campus. I fear it's not Chief Newton who needs additional education sir, it's you. I am grateful every day that when I attend college I can feel safe and secure in the knowledge that some teenager won't be getting mad at another teenager who has been flirting with his girlfriend and decide to go and shoot him. I just love you folks who think the answer to violence is more violence. It's even better that you feel the need to criticize, name call, and condemn people who believe differently than you do. Very christian.

It's okay Heather. You will eventually grow up a little. When you leave the perfect bubble that your parents and teachers have created for you and realize that this is a twisted, messed up world, I pray that you will realize that your life and the life of your children are in your own hands and take action to guard them.
No, I don't condone 18 year olds with no experience with guns running around with reckless abandon. I do condone 21 year old college students that are trained and otherwise carry a gun for their own defense every day be permitted to do so on campus. These students are already licensed and go about their business not shooting up parties and drinking. Why would crossing an invisible boundry onto a college campus suddenly transform them into careless raging morons? How many of our brave soldiers with plenty of experience with a firearm return from Iraq and Afganistan and go back to school? Wouldn't you feel safer knowing that one of these brave students has your back should an idiot strike?
As to the Chief, I wonder if he really believes the nonsense he spews. I wonder if he would like to see his daughter traveling in the same neighborhood late at night. The idea that you willfully submit is insane. You must fight tooth and nail if you wish to prevail. Thank God that kid "survived" as the Chief put it. But it is not enough to survive, you must prevail. I know it is a terrible analogy but Christopher Reeve survived his fall from his horse. Winning is better than simply not losing.
Until you graduate and eventually become a parent, I pray that you remain safe while in school. It is okay to be a liberal in college and have big dreams and ideas but if you remain a liberal as you age you will degenerate into one of those morons on the left coast that still wish they had not seen what an evil world this is and live in denial wishing for their protective bubbles they enjoyed in childhood.
I am not patronizing you but I was 20 years old once.
Good luck Heather.

Just so you know, I am a 35 year old returning college student. I have been living outside that perfect bubble for quite a while now.
In addition to that, when I was 19 I was robbed at gunpoint. I complied and not only survived. I did not get shot, he took the money he wanted and left. Had I tried to pull a gun back on him I can guarantee you I would not be sitting here typing out this message.
In response to your statement regarding 21 year olds who are trained on how to use firearms being able to carry them.....what makes them more responsible in the first place just because they have been trained? I don't know how mature you were at 21 but from what I remember about my early 20's, gun training alone wouldn't make me feel safe around a 21 year old college student packing a gun.
Your promoting people walking around college campuses with a firearm is not really what disturbs me most, it's that you have the audacity to call yourself a christian. Because you are a republican, christianity doesn't necessarily follow.
I have been an active member of my church for many years and vote republican for reasons that have nothing to do with firearms.
I must not have read the book of the bible that says it's ok to chastise people that hold different beliefs. Or that they are less intelligent, moronic or any of the comments you made about liberals in your response.
Your favorite quote regarding bleeding hippies is exactly the kind of thing that those of us that are conservative but can and should tolerate different views, are constantly trying to battle against.
You can and should always voice your view and opinion, but calling someone an idiot, or a moron while trying to show that you are in some way on a higher level falls precariously short of that.
Our differences are what makes us American. And this negativity you promote by calling anyone who is different than you an idiot, only makes it harder to get real conservative christian values out there into the public again.
If you truly call yourself a christian you might just take a look at the message you are sending.

Heather,
My point about a 21 year old with a concealed carry license is that, not only is he/she trained and been exposed to the law surrounding the responsibility of carrying a gun, but they are doing it right now off of campus. These same people are next to you in a restaurant, standing in line at a WalMart and maybe even sitting beside you on public transportation if you use it. They are not suddenly going wild and shooting people at random in the streets so what makes you think that they would do that once they step onto campus? What is in the water that suddenly transforms an otherwise competent adult into a gun crazy madman? I am not talking about issuing a gun to each student at orientation, I am talking about letting the older students that already carry a gun daily to do so on campus.
I am sorry that you are disturbed that I would call myself a Christian. I assure you I am one but maybe not a very good one. I'll keep trying. As to being a Republican, I am not one. I am not registered in any party and am an independent. I do tend to vote Republican since a lot of them share the same views as I do but I do not vote for a candidate because he has a silly little letter beside his name on the ballot. Ohio makes it easy to not be a Republican with all the RINO's running around out there.
You then start talking some noise about how I should be tolerant of other views. Blah blah blah. You better check the URL again. This is FATWHITEMAN.COM. It is a domain I bought for $10. This isn't "We Are The World". I'm not Tom Petty. I'm pretty sure I don't have to be tolerant of much of anything. I am really sure I don't have to be tolerant of libtards, commies and enemies of The United States Constitution and The Bill of Rights. And I do seem to have a real low tolerance for hippies, bleeding or otherwise.
I've never pretended that I am wiser or smarter than anyone else. In fact, I don't make a lot of pretentions. I have had a few less than charitable comments posted by libtards. I usually let the comments stand but really since this is my blog and my domain I can do whatever the hell I want to.
Feel free to visit and try to make me a better, more tolerable Christian anytime.
