Defying Sanity
Defiance College has decided to have a mock shooting drill according to an email circulating on the internet.
I'm sure it will be realistic and will really help in the event that there ever is a real gunman. Assuming of course that the gunman follows the script, stays where the police are searching and doesn't wonder in to the "safe" bunker and start shooting.
To be even more realistic, the college is even going to offer counselors to help students cope with the mock disaster. Pretty realistic since that is just like they would do if there was a real tragedy.
I wonder what kind of "enlightened" or "educated" moron came up with this plan. If they really want to learn "how to keep the campus as safe as possible", they will arm every licensed CCW holder on campus with an Airsoft pistol and see what happens. Bet the shooter is down long before the police get there. Well, normally, but in this case, the police will already be there when they start now and be ready to search the building he is staying in and waiting for them. I'm sure their response time will be perfect.
Guess the only real purpose of this game is to make the sheep students feel safe.
Here is the email text:
Next week, on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, the College and the Defiance Police department will conduct an emergency response drill to test our readiness and procedures for a violent intruder scenario on the campus. In light of the tragedies that took place at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University, it is imperative that we take steps to improve our awareness and readiness. The College has developed a safe shelter and a procedure (see attached) that we want everyone on the campus to rehearse next Wednesday, March 26, 2008.
The police, with the assistance of Dr. Knueve and his non-institutional corrections CJ class, will actually role-play a violent intruder scenario in Defiance Hall at around 1:15 pm on March 26th. A person role-playing as a violent intruder will be in Defiance Hall. A police response team will report to Defiance Hall to search the building and deal with the intruder. This event will help the police with their training and procedures, and it will also give the College a chance to evaluate one aspect of our own emergency response plan.
At about the same time that this intense activity will be going on in Defiance Hall, the rest of the campus will be asked to practice a safe shelter in proper procedure in their various buildings and locations. The campus will be notified at approximately 1:30 pm to begin going to the shelter and then receive the all clear signal 5-10 minutes later.
Why am I sharing this information with you?
1. It is important that we practice this new procedure in place practice realistically.
2. I want you to treat the drill seriously, but not panic. Normally in this type of event you might want to call out to 9-1-1 or to friends or family. In this instance because it is a known drill, please do not phone the authorities or your family and friends. The Police, Sheriffs Office, and Highway Patrol already know that we are conducting this drill.
3. If you have class in Defiance Hall on Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 pm, I want you to be prepared for the noise and disruption that must accompany the drill itself. There will be realistic sounds of gunfire, there will be yelling, there will be uniformed police running into the building and searching all three floors.
4. If the drill brings up any uncomfortable feelings or anxiety, counseling staff will be available in the Health Center that afternoon for walk-in visitors.
I apologize for any disruption this drill may cause for you on that day, but it is important for us to practice our procedures to learn how to improve and keep the campus as safe as possible. I will continue to remind everyone about this important drill over the next eight days.
Please spread the word among your friends and classmates.
