What's In Your Bootloader?

The civil war is over and Tux has won.  I'm not sure who actually started the coup but Windows and Linux went at it and Linux is the victor.  Tux was quoted as saying simply: "Quaesita Marte Tuenda Arte".

It began as a rivally between my many OS's but when the dust was settled, only Fedora Core 6 remains. Windows, FC4, and Ubuntu no longer exist on my computer.  To resolve the Bootloader Wars, I threw in a brand new Hard Drive and loaded Fedora Core 6. I mounted the old drive and retrieved what files I needed from the various partitions.  Now all that is left is to delete the old partitions and make it a media storage drive.

Just out of curiosity, maybe I just haven't been reading enough FWM, but why no likey Ubuntu 6.10? did you have problems with Ubuntu 6.10? Or was it just more of a personal preference?

Just curious because, I've been playing with Ubuntu...I hope I don't go blind...

I actually attempted a trial of Ubuntu 6.10.  What I found out when attempting to install it was that it did not give you any control over GRUB.  In order to work with my third party bootloader, I needed the option of installing the MBR on the partition rather than the first partition. Without the ability to choose, it would just wipe out my MBR.  After researching with Viacom that makes System Commander, I found out that this is an Ubuntu problem going back a ways.

Since that first attempt, I have downloaded a copy of the Ubuntu 6.10 Alternate CD.  This supposedly allows you to control GRUB during the install process though I have not tried it.  I used the Alternate Install to install a copy of 6.10 Server on an old P3 733 that has only 128MB of RAM. I'm going to play with it a bit.

As to UBUNTU vs. FEDORA CORE 6, I don't know that there is a lot of difference since I am using GNOME.  With GNOME running about the only difference I have found is that I use YUM instead of APT-GET.  Maybe as I learn more about it I'll see a more significant difference between distros.

I'm wondering if your website is created using a different OS than the rest of us, won't that cause problems for some opeople, not being able to view the page? (I'm not too computer-literate.)

Nope, not a problem. You are using Wordpress for your site. You could sit down at my computer and log in and edit your site all day long.  You just wouldn't be using Internet Explorer but rather Firefox. If you use Firefox on your Windows machine now, you wouldn't see any difference.  My wife would wonder who you are and why you are using my computer though.

Actually, 90% of the internet is running on Linux/Unix servers now and you probably log into one when you update your blog or check you email.
